SUMMARY:Holiday Mini Grants 2024
DESCRIPTION:Our 11th annual Holiday Mini-Grant Program is once again funded by the generous Mike Hull Memorial Fund. Grant winners will be decided by the Mike Hull Memorial Fund and families will be granted at a private Holiday Party (usually a Sunday evening in early to mid-December). Grant recipients and their families are required to attend. Grant applications will be taken September 28-October 27\, 2024. \nFamilies must be located in Mahoning\, Trumbull or Columbiana counties since these are the counties the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley serves. A child\, teen or adult must have an autism spectrum diagnosis. Please do not apply if you have been given a holiday mini-grant in past years from our organization to allow other families an opportunity.  Please only apply if you are not able to afford items or if it will be a financial hardship to do so. \nItems can include — Devices for communication needs (tablet requests will be considered\, but they will not be iPads due to cost)\, recreational or fitness items\, items to help students with educational needs\, items to help with social or emotional needs of individuals\, and more. Although we do not ask for the family’s income\, please only apply if buying these items would cause a strain on the family to purchase.\nNo cash\, gift card or payment donations will be given. Please only request an item(s) that can be purchased at a local store or online store.\nIf you have any questions or need some help on identifying possible grant requests contact our Director\, Robin for assistance by email at robin@autismmv.org.  She has been coordinating this program for many years and understands the requests and specific needs that the funders have so they can shop for grant needs. \nPlease Note: If your child is under 18 years of age and not receiving FSS funds from your county or if your child is over 18 and not receiving waiver services\, please contact Robin at robin@autismmv.org to start discussions and she will connect you to your Board of DD for assistance. These FSS funds when available can be used for swim lessons\, gym memberships\, Camp FRIEND\, respite\, therapy not covered by insurance and more. Case management services are also available for families to explore needs and resources. \n\n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.

Our mission is to create lasting friendships within and beyond our group. To achieve this important goal\, we are searching for individuals who can participate regularly. Please only register if you plan on attending consistently in order to promote meaningful relationships.\nSocial Connections is currently a no-cost program\, other than event day expenses (example: $15 for bowling\, shoe rental\, and lunch costs). **We are actively searching for annual and monthly business sponsors to help with future costs – please contact us!\nSocial Connections is appropriate for tweens/teens (12-17 yo) and young adults (18-35 yo) with autism with low to moderate support needs. Individuals need to be able to communicate verbally\, or communicate well with an AAC device. Individuals should be able to participate on their own with minimal support. Parents or caregivers are to attend but should sit off from the group. Activity costs vary based on each month’s event\, but will be kept minimal. Each group is only open to 20 individuals at this time. If there is a need we will happily expand the group and hire additional professional staff. We will be sending out a full online survey to gather more information soon to those who register.\nThe Social Connections Group is being facilitated by Jennifer Groce. Jennifer is an intervention specialist at Potential Development. We plan to have an additional 1-2 professional support staff to assist. Our support staff includes: Jessica (teacher at Youngstown City Schools) and Joe or Julia\, BCBAs from the Rich Center for Autism.\nAlmost 8 years ago Social Connections was a program of the then Autism Society of Ohio\, Mahoning Valley. We were then ready to launch for April 2020 and then the pandemic hit. So we are excited to bring back this program to help teens and young adults meet and work on their social skills in a relaxed and fun way.
